Looking Toward the Future

None of us knows what the future will bring. None of us knows if he or she has a future beyond this moment in time. One of my favorite sayings (and I may have used it before) is "I may not know what the future holds, but I know Who holds my future!"
My father-in-law, Duane, went to be with our Lord last week. I was very thankful that I had the opportunity to go and say goodbye. It was a very loving, family-filled time. Which seems sort of strange, since this was my ex-husband's father. But we have all always gotten along very well, and they accepted me as one of the family without hesitation.
There was a strange dichotomy going on as well, because in the bed lay the dying man, and around the room ran three of his noisy and exuberant great-grandsons. It was very much a feeling of time continuing on...the circle of life.
It was a sad yet joyful time. For most of us it was a peaceful time; we knew that Grandpa Duane was headed Home. There were prayers, there were stories, there were jokes and there was serious talk. There were tears and there was laughter - all as it should be.
I had the privilege to be Duane's daughter for a time. His and Dorothy's home was always full of love and laughter. And food, and coffee, and grandkids, and card games, and joy. Duane will be greatly missed, yet even through our grief we hear the sound of heaven rejoicing that he is Home at last.
I don't know what the future holds - except the one thing that matters most of all: my future is with my King, Jesus Christ. And until the time when I see Him face-to-face, I will allow Him to hold my future. Through happy times, and through sad times; through anger, fear, and grief. Through happiness, and hope, and joy; I will look to Him, my Future.
